The Exchange of Refugees – special event

25 March 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Tuesday 25 March, 7 pm UK, 9 pm Israel. Little notice has been paid to the fate of the 850,000 Jewish refugees from the Arab states, about 550,000 of whom were resettled in Israel. Similarly, the resettlement of most of the Palestinian refugees in the host Arab countries, creating a de facto population exchange, has been overlooked.

President Trump has moved the Overton window with his talk of transferring the Palestinians of Gaza. This idea, is however, not new, argues Shaul Bartal. In fact, Arab states have already tacitly accepted the concept of  an exchange of Jewish and Arab refugee populations.

Shaul Bartal is Research Associate at Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, Bar–Ilan University and at Instituto do Oriente (IO), Universidade de Lisboa. He is the author of The Fedayeen Emerge: The Palestine-Israel Conflict, 1949-1956 (AuthorHouse, 2011); Jihad in Palestine: Political Islam and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (Routledge, 2016); New Forms of Palestinian Terror Against Israel: A Profile of Al-Quds Intifada (Edwin Mellen Press, 2017). He is the co-author of Hamas and Ideology: Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi on the Jews, Zionism and Israel (Routledge, 2018) and has written several articles about the Israeli-Arab conflict and Tunisian politics.
