Jews of Egypt, 1869 – 1956

Tuesday 18 March, 7:30 pm UK, 3:30 pm ET, 12:30 pm PT, 8:30 pm Europe. With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, hundreds of thousands of immigrants moved to Egypt, drawn by its promise of prosperity. Among them were many Jews who joined the established community, whose origins date back to the time of the Pyramids. Until 1956, the Egyptian Jewish community experienced its golden age, contributing in all fields. A new book, Jews of Egypt, tells you everything you need to know about the Jewish community – its organisation, demographics, movements and associations, synagogues, rabbis and prominent figures. The story is brought to life with many photographs, most as yet unpublished.
Daniel Fishman will present Jews of Egypt, published in 2024 in Italian and English by Belforte Solomone. He was born in the British city of Bradford to a family of Egyptian Jews. They soon moved to Milan, where he lives today.
He is active in the Italian Jewish community and has been editor of the monthly journal of the Milan community. He has authored several books and essays with a particular focus on Jewish history and the Middle East.
