An Evening to commemorate the Exodus of Jews from Arab Countries and Iran

On Wednesday 20 November at 7:00 pm, JW3, in partnership with HARIF and the Jewish Music Institute, is hosting the official UK commemoration in the presence of communal leaders and senior diplomats. This year our theme will be ‘The Jews of Iran.’
This year marks the 10th anniversary since the Knesset Law was passed designating a day in the calendar to mark the exodus and departure of Jews from Arab countries and Iran.
A community of 100,000 has dwindled to some 8,000 as a result of antisemitism, persecution and discrimination following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. We will hear a first-hand testimony of a Jewish refugee. We are also delighted to present Danielle and Galeet Dardashti, sisters and co-creators of the audio-documentary The Nightingale of Iran, who will be joining us from New York.
Through a multi-media presentation of story, music and photos, the Dardashti sisters will relate the journey of their famous Iranian-Jewish musical family from Iran, to Israel and the USA.
Sisters Danielle and Galeet Dardashti grew up hearing about their grandfather, Younes Dardashti. He was a musical icon who sang at the palace of Mohammad Reza Shah, criss-crossing the country to perform in concert halls and on the radio. But he never became a professional musician. Why not? The sisters reveal their grandfather’s secret. Recording here.
