Jews of Tunisia

1 November @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Tuesday 1 November 2022, 7:30 pm. Sandwiched between Algeria and Libya, Tunisia has had a millennial Jewish history. It was a centre of medieval scholarship, but also saw periods of repression.  The arrival of Livornese Jews exiled from Spain after 1492 gave the community a unique character.  After the French protectorate was established in 1881, Jews became the vector of modernity. Thousands were sent to forced labour camps during the six months of direct f Nazi occupation of Tunisia in 1942 and the community declined rapidly during the 1950s and 60s. Lyn Julius of Harif will  give an overview,  from the arrival of Jews on the island of Djerba 2,000 years ago to the community’s near-demise in the 21st century.
