It was a centre of medieval scholarship, but also saw periods of repression.  The arrival of Livornese Jews exiled from Spain after 1492 gave the community a unique character.  After the French protectorate was established in 1881, Jews became the vector of modernity. Thousands were sent to forced labour camps during the six months of direct f Nazi occupation of Tunisia in 1942 and the community declined rapidly during the 1950s and 60s.
