Moroccan Jews and their diasporas

Tuesday 4 February, 7 pm UK, 9 pm Israel time. Jewish exiles from Spain resettled in northern Morocco after 1492. Maintaining their links with Spain and the Hispanic diaspora, they emerged as one of the most mobile and resilient of North African groups. Indeed, they created a unique Hispanic Moroccan diaspora, with hubs in Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Spain – as well as Israel, Canada and France. The author of Entwined homelands, empowered diasporas: Hispanic Moroccan Jews and their globalising community (Indiana UP, 2024), Aviad Moreno will explain how this small community succeeded in setting up transnational networks linking multiple homelands.

Aviad Moreno is a senior lecturer at Ben Gurion University and heads the Communities and Mobilities research hub at the Azrieli Center for Israel Studies. He has published over 40 articles and three books, including the anthology The Long History of Mizrahim: New Directions in the Study of Jews from Islamic Countries (Hebrew, Ben-Gurion University Press, 2021). Moreno advises the Anu Museum, the Israel Studies journal and is on the board of The National Academy for Ladino. He also co-chairs the Sephardi/Mizrahi Division at the Association of Jewish Studies (AJS) and is an international member of the Spanish Royal Academy.
