AN EVENING TO MARK THE DEPARTURE AND EXPULSION OF JEWS FROM ARAB COUNTRIES AND IRAN

Please join Harif and JW3 for this year’s Annual Comnmemoration on Thursday 19 November at 7:00 pm, the highlight of the Harif calendar: Our theme this year will be Jews of Egypt: 70 years since Suez.

In the autumn of 1956, following a war with Britain, France and Israel, Egyptian president Nasser turned on the country’s Jewish citizens. Some 25,000 Jews were forced to leave, some at a moment’s notice. In the presence of community leaders and diplomats, we will feature testimonies of Jews who resettled in Britain following the expulsion. Guy Schalom and his band will transport us back to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the 1950s with music popular throughout the Middle East.

A reception will follow.

£10, in the building or online: booking link here

Visitors to JW3 are invited to browse the spectacular Harif exhibition at the entrance. It celebrates Sephardi culture in London and explains the Henna ceremony widely practised by Jews from Arab countries to bestow blessings of happiness and fertility on a forthcoming marriage.
