The stateless Central Asian merchant

28 April @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Tuesday 28 April, 7:30 pm Uk, 2:30 pm ET. A spiral-bound memoir written in Judeo-Farsi was discovered after the writer, Haim Abraham, born in 1897 in Turkmenistan, passed away. It gives a rare and invaluable  window into life in the Jewish Triangle, which spans Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia.

Years later, the journal, covering 90 years,  was translated and formed the basis for Dahlia Abraham-Klein’s book: The stateless Central Asian merchant.  Abraham’s merchant family had barely survived Russian Tsarist, Bolshevik, and Soviet violence. They were not nationals anywhere, forced to move in search of religious freedom and economic opportunity.  But they did have a strong community to rely on.
Our presenter Dahlia Abraham-Klein is a teacher and writer on Central Asian Jewish history and Jewish values. Her articles have appeared in Tablet, Chabad.org, Jewish Journal, and The Times of Israel.  Her books include Caravan of Hope: A Bukharan Woman’s Journey to Freedom, Silk Road Vegetarian, Spiritual Kneading through the Jewish Months and Necessary Mourning.
