The Mufti, Nazi Propaganda and The Farhud

7 August 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Sunday 7 August 2016, 7 pm.

This is a unique opportunity to hear an illustrated talk by Dr Edy Cohen, fellow of the International Communications Center of Bar Ilan University. Drawing on research in Israeli and French archives, Dr Cohen will talk about the first Nazi Arabic propaganda broadcasts by Radio Berlin to the Arab world during WWII. Dr Cohen has discovered documents which shed new light on how radio messages would have incited the June 1941 Farhud, in which hundreds of Iraqi Jews were murdered. As well as assessing the role of the Palestinian Mufti in the pogrom, Dr Cohen will present examples of the millions of Nazi-printed leaflets in Arabic scattered across the Middle East and North Africa.Edy Cohen made aliya from Lebanon, where Hezbollah kidnapped and murdered his father. Dr Cohen has done extensive post-doctoral research and is working on his third book. Married with three children, he is also an activist campaigning for justice for Jewish refugees from Arab countries. Ohel David Eastern Synagogue, 4-15 Broadwalk Lane, London NW11 8HD (behind Golders Green Rd). Doors open 6.30 pm.
