Shafiq Ades : an Iraqi-Jewish Dreyfus?

Tuesday 3 January 2023, 7 pm UK time, 9 pm Israel. Shafiq Ades, considered the wealthiest Jew in Iraq, was hanged in front of cheering crowds outside his Basra mansion on September 23, 1948, after a kangaroo court found him guilty of treason and aiding the “Zionist enemy.” His brutal execution and public humiliation sent shockwaves through the millennia-old Jewish community in Iraq; together with the 1941 pogrom of the Farhud, it was the main reason for the hurried 1950-1951 Jewish exodus from Iraq. What were the similarities between the Shafiq Ades and Dreyfus affairs – the deliberate targeting of a prominent Jew as a scapegoat by the government? Adas personified both the opportunities and the problems of his age. His personal story represents a collective biography of an entire community.
