Jews of Mosul

21 October 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Tuesday 21 October, 7:00 pm UK, 9:00 pm Israel. Mosul once had a thriving Jewish community with roots dating to the 8th century BCE. No Jews live there now, the community having fled for Israel in 1950 -1, but the challenge of preserving its memory and heritage remains, especially following the onslaught by ISIS in northern Iraq in 2014.
This lecture will give an overview of the Jews’ history in Mosul, with a particular focus on the Ottoman and British periods.
Our speaker Nadav Yidgar has long had a passion for history and for this Jewish community in particular. In Hebrew his family name Yadgar means ‘the one who keeps or preserves the memory.’ He is a high-tech manager who has lived in London and Zurich. He now lives in Israel.
The photos are of the Sassoon synagogue in Mosul and the city’s riverfront.
