SUMMARY:Reaching Israel from Yemen and Aden: a shared Jewish struggle
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 27 October 2026\, 7:30 pm UK\, 9:30 pm Israel. Please note 3:30 pm ET\, 12:30 pm PT. Yemeni and Adeni Jews  in the 20th century were divided by borders and cultural differences. They were frequently united\, however\, by their determination to make aliya. Migration to the land of Israel brought tens of thousands of Yemeni Jews to and through Aden over decades: the history of that contact\, though often fraught\, offers a case study in Jewish solidarity. \nBenjamin Berman-Gladstone is a Fellow at the Katz Centre for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been published\, or is forthcoming\, in Middle Eastern Studies\, Israel Studies\, Jewish History\, Antisemitism Studies\, and other journals. He is working on his first work project with Rutgers University Press. \nThe photo shows Hashed camp for Yemeni Jews in 1949 (credit: Eldan David) \nTo receive Zoom details please subscribe to the Harif mailing list  at www.harif.org or write to info@harif.org

SUMMARY:Did the Zionists cause Jews to leave?
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 10 November\, 7:30 pm UK. Is it  becoming received wisdom that ‘the Zionists’ caused ‘false-flag’ operations to convince Jews to leave Arab countries like Iraq and Egypt? Accusations against the Israeli secret service\, Mossad\,  have dogged it for decades . Recently\, British Iraq-born historian Avi Shlaim\,  in his memoir ‘Three Worlds\, ‘ has breathed new life into the claim that ‘the Zionists’ set off bombs in Iraq  during 1950 – 51. In Israel a new documentary called ‘Baghdad files’ repeats the accusations made by Israeli journalist Baruch Nadel\, based on his interviews with more than 100 Iraqi Jews. \nIn Egypt in 1954\, in what became known as the Lavon Affair\, young Zionists did plant bombs in foreign institutions in Cairo\, but the operation itself was a failure. \nWhat bearing did these episodes have on the exodus\, at a time when Jews were confronting  a rising tide of hostility and state-sanctioned  antisemitism? \nLyn Julius of Harif will examine the facts. \nTo receive Zoom login details please subscribe to Harif\, or write to info@harif.org \n

DESCRIPTION:In-person or online. Book here \nPlease join Harif and JW3 for this year’s Annual Comnmemoration on Thursday 19 November at 7:00 pm\, the highlight of the Harif calendar: Our theme this year will be Jews of Egypt: 70 years since Suez. \nIn the presence of community leaders and diplomats\, we will feature testimonies of Jews who resettled in Britain following the expulsion. Guy Schalom and his band will transport us back to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the 1950s. Avivit  will perform songs popular throughout the Middle East. \nDrummer\, percussionist and record producer Guy Schalom was described by ROOTS magazine as “one of the most versatile and interesting percussionists working in the UK today.”  Born to an Egyptian Jewish family\, his unique drumming style can be heard on more than 400 commercial recordings including numerous movies\, TV shows and computer games for BBC\, Netflix\, Disney\, Amazon\, SEGA and even British Airways. \n\n\nAccompanying him tonight is his Egyptian band: The Baladi Blues Ensemble.  Founded in 2007\, the Baladi Blues Ensemble recreates the sophisticated\, urban sounds of 1950’s Cairo.  Their music was heavily featured in the popular BBC documentary Bellydancing and the Blues – which Guy himself presented. \nThe band is joined this evening by Guy’s long-time collaborator\, the gifted singer: Avivit Caspi.  Avivit is also of Mizrahi heritage and has sung in settings as diverse as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Glastonbury (UK).  She even made live TV history when singing the national anthem live at Wembley Football Stadium when England played Israel. \n \nA reception with music will follow. \n£10 in the building or online\, booking link here.. \nVisitors to JW3 are invited to browse the spectacular Harif exhibition at the entrance.
