An evening with Orly Halpern
Travels of a Jewish journalist in the Arab
world
Orly Halpern is an American-Israeli war correspondent. A fluent
Arabic speaker, she spent one year in Baghdad, covering the Iraq
war. For The Jerusalem Post she travelled across the Arab and Muslim
world learning about the politics, the people, and their views
on Jews and Israel.
Hiding her Jewish identity from Shi’ites in Sadr City, or
Saddam’s tribe in Tikkrit, Orly developed a particular interest
in Jewish communities living amongst the Arabs, spending Passover
with the last Afghan Jew in Kabul and with Bahraini Jews in Manama.
Now a freelance writer and reporter, she is now working on a book
about her year in Iraq.
