Salim Fattal: 2,600 years of Judaism in Iraq
Salim Fattal was born in Baghdad in 1930. Briefly a member of the
Communist party in Iraq, he fled to Israel where he forged
a distinguished career in broadcast journalism.
Fattal will be showing the first of a three-part documentary
on the Jews of Iraq. Once leading players in the country’s
economy and society, the Jews were, like other minorities, marginalised
and finally expelled by the Iraqi regime. Fattal’s recently-completed
memoir, In the Alleys of Baghdad, vividly describes the
story of five generations of a Jewish family and revisits the last
years of a world gone by.
